DEM (National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”) is a self-governing research organization, under the supervision of the Greek Government. With a staff of over 700, including 100 post-graduate students and over 300 research associates, DEM is the biggest research center in applied sciences and engineering in Greece. The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT), one of the five Institutes of DEM, has accumulated substantial expertise and is actively involved in many areas of information technologies and telecommunications, while it has participated in numerous EU and nationally funded research projects. DEM/IIT participates in the project through the Wireless Communications Laboratory (WiCom). WiCom specializes in electromagnetic radiation aspects, propagation of electromagnetic waves (theoretical aspects and measurements) and radio access of various communication systems including advanced transmit/receive techniques, MIMO systems and spatial modulation techniques. Moreover, the laboratory has long experience in system-level analysis, simulations and development of software tools. Additionally, strong activities have been developed related to antenna design and interaction between antennas and human-body. Recently, special focus is given on antennas with metamaterials, wearable antennas including design and implementation of antennas placed on textiles (thus suitable for user’s clothing) and characterization of on-body channel as well as many aspects of wireless communications for static, mobile and wearable nodes.
